How Do We Give the Gift of Literacy?

Reading in the librarian's seat.
Wright to Read recruits, trains, and supports volunteer tutors and mentors who work with elementary school students on reading. Volunteer tutors are matched with Alexandria City Public School students who are identified by their teachers as needing help with reading. Our Tutor/Mentor volunteers work with students in the public libaries, primarily. We also have after school reading programs. In these programs, a group of volunteers tutor at the same time in a specified location. See the Get Involved Page for details.
We ask volunteers to work with students for at least one year, including the summer. Many of our volunteers have worked with a student for several years. For a student, beginning a new school year is easier when he/she has the confidence that comes from having a dedicated tutor and mentor.

Enrichment Activities to Support Reading

Wright to Read also provides enrichment activities for students and their tutors. We have Readers Take the Stage reading recitals, go on field trips, and celebrate the end of the school year with a picnic.
Promoting Literacy Through Special Projects
Wright to Read and Hooray for Books co-host the Alexandria Story Festival. The festival invites popular authors to town to read to children, talk to children about reading and writing, and sign books. The festival is one way that we build excitement about reading.
Wright to Read, along with The Giving Circle of Alexandria and Hooray for Books!, prepare and distribute Summer Reading Packs. This year, we collected and sorted books to make 1,200 packs for Alexandria students. It is rewarding to see bright smiles when students see the books in their packs.
BFF stands for Books, Friends, and Fun and is a book group for girls in grades 6-8 and their mentors from Alexandria Mentoring Partnership Programs.
