Summer Reading Pack Excitement is in the Air
The 2011 Summer Reading Pack Project is under way. The project, in its 5th year, is a collaboration of Wright to Read, the Giving Circle of Alexandria, and Hooray for Books. We aim to create 1,200 packs of books for Alexandria students this year.
Volunteers are needed to help assemble packs on Saturday, April 30 from 10-1 at the Wright to Read office, 414 N. Washington Street.
Children are welcome to volunteer with their parents. Bring your child if
he/she can follow directions and work for several hours (generally 4th grade +).
New Books are needed. Please donate your favorites or buy from the recommended list at the right. We suggest buying paperbacks from Hooray for Books for this project, so that you receive a discount and can donate more books for the same price.
Monetary donations can help the project through the packing day and beyond as we fill gaps in the book donations. Make donations payable to Wright to Read or donate online and note that your donation is for the Summer Reading Pack Project.
Thanks to our partners and supporters in this project (see above).

A Winter Full of Books!
The Winter chill encourages us to curl up with a good book for a whole day of reading and imagining. We also spend the holiday season sharing meaningful time with our loved ones and neighbors. Wright to Read's wonderful community of readers kept busy exploring new books and supporting our friends and neighbors during the last month of 2010.
Many students enjoyed our Holiday Lunch with their Tutor/Mentors, excited to pick out their gift book. The books were generously donated by Wright to Read supporters and patrons of Hooray for Books! bookstore. A big thank you to our friends at Austin Grill.
In early December, a team of volunteers from our in-town neighbors, United Way Worldwide, helped us organize the library of an After School Program site.
Thank you to all who helped make 2010 a successful year.

Each bookbag included 2 new books and 1 gift-quality, used book; the books were collected and assembled with help and support from The Giving Circle of Alexandria and students and parents from Burgundy Farm School.
We ate yummy summer foods, decorated visors, and listened to the great music of Christylez Bacon! Thank you Christylez for sharing your music and poetry skills with our Readers!

Origami Yoda was lots of fun!
Thanks so much to author Tom Angleberger for sharing his new book, The Strange Case of Origami Yoda with Wright to Read Students at Hooray for Books.
Everyone had fun hearing the chapter about the embarrassing water stain and making Origami Yoda finger puppets.
See a video of Tom talking about his book and about getting students interested in writing on the Resources for Volunteers page.

Reader's Take the Stage - April, 2010
Wright to Read held our regular "Readers Take the Stage" series last week. All of our readers did a wonderful job reading selections from the books they are currently reading!
Thank you Readers!
Reader's Take the Stage is a showcase of our youth readers. Readers share selections from the books they are currently reading, poems that they enjoy or pieces they have written themselves. Last Friday, Readers and their Tutors made their own Word Shakers - our own word search game!
We look forward to the next Reader's Take the Stage!

Summer Reading Pack Project 2010
Wright to Read thanks The Giving Circle of Alexandria and Hooray for Books for partnering again this year to prepare Summer Reading Packs for students in Wright to Read and around Alexandria. On March 14, over 25 volunteers, including many parents and students from Burgundy Farm Middle School, sorted donated books and prepared over 800 Summer Reading Packs. Our goal is 1200. In the weeks leading up to March 14, the Jefferson Court St. Patrick's Day party crowd donated funds to purchase 150 Elliot's Park books. Also, Burgundy Farm hosted a Baskets for Books fundraiser which raised over $1,500 to purchase books. Summer Reading Packs will be distributed in late May and early June. Thanks so much to all who have participated in, and donated to the project.
